Tom yum calories make an interesting topic to look into. Though tom yum soup is utterly delicious and has won the hearts of non-Asian people, the question is, whether it is nutritious too. In a country like America, where people are getting obese at a rapid speed, the question that how many calories a food item has, is of prime importance. And the good news is the ever-tasty and ever-favorite tom yum soup contains only 143 calories per bowl, which is less than 8% of the total daily requirement of calories, based on the 2000-calorie diet.
To find out more on this interesting fact, let us see the recipe of the typical tom yum soup. Following ingredients are required to make the soup:
chicken or shrimp 1 pound, made into medium-size pieces
1 ½ cup of mushrooms, sliced vertically
6 – 8 galangal, sliced thin
4 to 5 tbsp fish sauce
¼ cup chopped tomatoes
2 tbsp red chilli pepper (quantity can be more or less than this, as you like it)
4 to 5 kaffir lime leaves
Thin slices of 5 shallots
7 to 8 tbsp lime juice
2 stalks of lemongrass, cut into approximately one inch pieces
1 tbsp of chilli paste, in soy bean oil
3 cups of water
1 cup of cilantro (to sprinkle for garnishing)
First thing you have to do is bring the water to a boil, keeping it in a medium-sized saucepan over a high flame. Then add the kaffir lime leaves and lemongrass and cook for 2 minutes.
Reducing the heat a little, add some of the contents like galangal, fish sauce, lime juice, red chilli, chilli paste in soy bean oil and shallots. Then you have to add the mushrooms and tomatoes and cook for a long time.
Now the chicken or shrimp is to be added and is to be cooked on a high flame, but not to be stirred. When the shrimp or chicken is done, keep the heat on for 2 minutes more. Cilantro leaves look beautiful on the top of the mixture, so sprinkle them on the top. And there is your tom yum soup. Serve the soup and rice together, while both are hot. 4 servings can be made with this much of soup.
The soup has 2.1 gm of fats, 5.7 gm of carbohydrates, 2.51 gm of proteins and 17 mg of cholesterol in each bowl. 19 calories are rendered by the fat it contains. You can see that it is not only delicious, but also extremely healthy, as it renders only the required calories for the daily energy requirement, not a unit more!
